Women of the District
Although the Wyong area was cleared, settled and built by the pioneering families, it is quite often difficult to find information of the 'silent' partners - the wives and mothers of the settlers. We have tried to find out what we can of these strong, brave women, and have listed them here. They are under their family name, but where possible we have listed their parents as well. Where their history links with other well known families, we have linked them to the 'Families' records on this site.
This excerpt taken from an article in the Wyong and Lakes District Advocate, November 25 1943.
Wives and Mothers of Earliest Pioneering Men
At the 29th Pioneer re-union held at Wyong on Saturday afternoon November 20 the names of some of the earliest pioneering women of the Wyong Creek Valley were mentioned from information gathered from Yarramalong Cemetery. Mr Tom Stinson paid a glowing tribute to the wives and mothers of the earliest pioneering men of the district, and also gave some interesting data concerning them.
“Our reunion today could be made one of appreciation of the sacrifice made by our pioneering women in the first instance, and also an appreciation of work being done by the women of the present day who have shown that they possess all the qualities of courage, determination of those of the past. Just at this time the work of the land army girls would be of considerable interest to us. Our pioneer women helped to lay the foundation of the development of this district.”
The ages and year of death were given. Elisabeth Stinson 63 d. 1865, Barbara Waters (wife of James Waters) 34 d. 1872, Jane Waters (James Waters’ mother) 66 d. 1878, Eliza Boyd (wife of Samuel Boyd) 47 d. 1879, Mary Stinson 53 d 1896, Margaret Waight (wife of Simon Waight) 84 d 1907, Sarah Hill (wife of Hamilton Hill) 72 d. 1913, Elizabeth Hill (Hamilton Hill’s mother) 96. Other names mentioned were Mrs J. Simmertson, Mrs William Hill, Mrs William Waters, Mrs Stackman.
